Garment Packaging and Carton Marking for Imported Orders

TAŞTekstil A.Ş. Global · September 14, 2026 · 8 min read

Garment packaging and carton marking cover everything between the last press and the container door: polybag, hangtag, folding, inner packing, carton selection, carton marking and the packing list. Specify all of it in the purchase order, because packing decided at the end of production is the most common cause of avoidable rework.

Buyers spend months on fabric, fit and price, then leave packing to a short line at the bottom of the purchase order. The factory fills the gap with whatever it usually does. The result is a shipment that is technically correct and commercially unusable: garments folded the wrong way for a website photograph, cartons too heavy for a warehouse to accept, or marking that does not match the packing list.

This guide covers the packing decisions that matter on an order produced in Turkey, and where in the process each one has to be locked.

What Does Packaging Cover on a Garment Order?

It is useful to separate packaging into two jobs, because they are specified by different people and checked at different points.

  • Presentation packaging is what the customer sees: polybag, tissue, folding, hangtag, price ticket, size sticker, ribbon or band.
  • Logistics packaging is what moves the goods: inner boxes, master cartons, carton marking, pallet configuration and the packing list.

Presentation packaging is usually driven by the brand or the retailer's own guidelines. Logistics packaging is usually driven by the receiving warehouse or the marketplace intake rules. Problems appear when one set of instructions is written and the other is assumed. A factory in Turkey can follow either standard, but only if both are given, in writing, before cutting starts.

Which Polybag Should You Specify?

The polybag is the packing item that has changed most in recent years, because retailers and consumers now ask about it directly. There are several variables and each one should be stated rather than left to the factory.

  • Material and recycled content, where many European and UK retailers now ask for a stated percentage of recycled polyethylene.
  • Thickness, which affects how the garment sits and whether the bag tears in transit.
  • Closure type, self adhesive lip, heat seal or fold over, and whether the adhesive strip is on the bag or on the flap.
  • Perforation and the suffocation warning, which is a standard requirement for many retailers and marketplaces.
  • Printing on the bag, including brand marks, recycling marks and any required notices.
  • Whether each unit is bagged individually, bagged in pairs, or only the outer inner box is bagged.

What Should Be on Hangtags and Price Tickets?

Hangtags carry brand information, and price tickets carry commercial and retail data. They are often the same physical item, and they are often the last thing ordered, which makes them a familiar reason for a shipment to sit finished in a factory waiting for trims.

Specify the card stock and weight, the size, the print colours, any finish such as matt lamination or spot varnish, the string or plastic fastener type, and exactly where the tag is attached. Attachment point matters more than buyers expect. A tag attached through the fabric leaves a hole, so most specifications call for attachment to a button, a care label or a loop.

If the ticket carries retail price, currency or a market specific barcode, you need a separate version per market and the factory has to keep them apart during packing. Where the ticket carries regulated information, confirm the content for each destination market.

Do You Need Retail Ready Packing or Bulk Packing?

Retail ready packing means the goods arrive in a state where they can go straight to the shop floor or straight into a pick face, with tickets attached, garments bagged and inner boxes labelled by size. Bulk packing means the goods arrive protected and counted, and the receiving operation does the rest.

Retail ready costs more in Turkey but usually costs less in total, because factory labour applied once is cheaper than warehouse labour applied per unit. It also removes a step where errors are introduced. Bulk packing makes sense where you repack anyway, where you are consolidating several suppliers, or where the destination applies its own ticketing.

Folding is part of this decision. State the fold type, whether tissue or card is used, whether the garment is folded on a board, and how it should look through the bag. For e-commerce brands photographing unboxing, folding is part of the product. For a wholesale order it may not matter at all.

When Should Cartons Be Solid Size and When Assorted?

Solid packing means one carton contains a single style, colour and size. Assorted packing means a carton contains a fixed ratio of sizes, for example a standard size run repeated several times.

Solid cartons suit central warehouses and e-commerce operations that pick by size, because a carton can go straight into a location. They are also easier to count and inspect. Assorted cartons suit direct to store delivery, where each shop needs a size run and nobody wants to break bulk in the back room.

The rule that avoids most disputes is simple. Whichever you choose, the ratio has to be fixed, printed on the carton, and identical to the packing list. Mixed cartons with a variable ratio are the hardest thing to inspect and the most likely to produce a short shipment claim, because nobody can confirm a count without opening everything.

What Are the Limits on Carton Dimensions and Weight?

Most receiving warehouses set a maximum carton weight for manual handling, and many set maximum dimensions so that cartons stack on a standard pallet without overhang. Typical apparel master cartons run in the region of ten to fifteen kilos, with heavier limits for machine handled operations. Confirm the actual limits with your own warehouse or your customer before production, because they vary by operation and by country.

Carton specification should state the board type and wall construction, the internal dimensions, the maximum gross weight, whether cartons are taped or strapped, and whether a carton liner is used. For sea freight, ask about board strength and moisture, since a carton that performs well in a truck can fail in a container after several weeks.

Why Must Carton Marking Match the Packing List?

Carton marking is the only information a warehouse has before it opens anything, and it is the information customs and your freight forwarder work from. If the marking and the packing list disagree, the shipment slows down and someone has to open cartons to find out which document is right.

Standard side marks usually carry the buyer name, purchase order number, style number, colour, size or assortment ratio, quantity in the carton, carton number in the form of a running number over the total, country of origin, and gross and net weight. A shipping mark on the opposite side carries the consignee and destination.

Three practical habits prevent most problems. Number cartons in a single continuous series per shipment rather than restarting per style. Make sure the packing list is produced from the actual packing, not from the order sheet. And have the marking checked physically during final inspection, against open cartons, before the goods leave Turkey.

Where Do Barcodes and Intake Labels Have to Sit?

Barcode placement is not a detail. Automated intake at a retailer or marketplace expects a scannable code in a predictable position, and a code that is under a fold, inside a bag seam or printed too small will be rejected at receipt even though the goods are correct.

Specify whether the barcode sits on the price ticket, on a sticker on the polybag, or both. State the exact position on the bag, the label size, the symbology and the print quality expected. If you sell through a marketplace, take the placement requirement from that marketplace's own intake documentation and pass it to the factory as an image, not as a description.

Why Do Packing Instructions Belong in the Purchase Order?

Packing is agreed late because it feels like the end of the job. It is actually a procurement decision, because polybags, hangtags, stickers and cartons all have lead times of their own and all have to be in the factory before finishing starts. Agreeing packing in the last week means either a delay or a compromise.

Put the full packing instruction in the purchase order and attach it as a document: polybag specification, folding method, hangtag and attachment, inner packing, carton specification, assortment ratio, marking artwork, barcode placement and weight limits. Then make packing part of the pre production sample review, so you approve a packed unit rather than a loose garment.

This is a large part of what a representative office does day to day. Tekstil A.Ş. Global has worked in Turkish textiles since 1980, runs a 48 person team from Atasehir, Istanbul, and works with a network of 2,000+ verified member manufacturers. The in house QC team checks packing physically against the purchase order, and because the company is paid by the buyer rather than the factory, packing shortcuts are raised rather than absorbed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who pays for packaging materials on a Turkish order?

Packaging is normally included in the unit price, but only for the specification that was quoted. If you ask for recycled polybags, printed cartons or retail ready ticketing after the price was agreed, expect a revised cost. Send the full packing specification with your request for quotation so the price reflects the goods you actually want.

Do polybags need a perforation and a suffocation warning?

Many retailers and marketplaces require both, and the wording and language of the warning vary by destination market. Treat it as a customer and destination requirement rather than a factory default, and confirm the current expectation for your market before you approve the bag artwork.

Should I use solid size cartons or assorted cartons?

Solid size cartons suit central warehouses and e-commerce picking because a carton can go straight to a location. Assorted cartons suit direct to store delivery where each shop needs a full size run. Whichever you pick, fix the ratio, print it on the carton and match it exactly to the packing list.

What is a safe maximum carton weight for apparel?

Manual handling limits at apparel warehouses commonly sit somewhere around ten to fifteen kilos, but this varies by operation and country. Confirm the limit with your own receiving warehouse or your customer before production, and state the maximum gross weight in the purchase order so the factory packs to it.

How is carton marking checked before shipment?

It should be verified physically at final inspection, with cartons opened and the contents compared against the side mark and the packing list. Tekstil A.Ş. Global's in house QC team carries out this check in the factory in Turkey, so a marking error is corrected before the goods are collected.

Can one order be packed differently for different customers?

Yes, and it is common when a brand supplies both its own warehouse and a retail account. It does need to be planned, because the factory has to run separate packing lines, keep two sets of trims apart and produce separate packing lists. Agree the split before production rather than during packing.

When should packing be finalised in the production calendar?

Before finishing starts, and ideally at purchase order stage. Polybags, hangtags, stickers and cartons all have their own lead times, typically one to three weeks depending on print complexity. Approve a packed unit as part of the pre production sample review rather than approving a loose garment.
